February 16th Benefit for Marilou
Dear Karatekas,
Please see the invitation below from Richard LeVangie, who has been a very long standing member of our dojo, regarding a special event for Marilou LeVangie, nidan, who was a member of Dal Karate back when we were at the Studley Gym in the 90's. I have pledged the proceeds from the next couple of gis orders to assist Marilou. I realize that many of you do not know Marilou but Dan and I know her to be a person always full of joy and optimism.
Osu,
Sensei Tony

Hello friends:
Hail and well met! I hope this note finds you well.
I'm inviting you to join my family in celebrating a life that is near and dear to me. As some will know, my little sister, Marilou, is battling cancer for the second time, only this time the disease has spread to her liver, lungs, bones, and brain. She's unable to work, her treatments are expensive, and we're trying to see what we can do to raise money and raise her spirits.
We've scheduled a soirée for Thursday, February 16, 7pm at Taboo Lounge on Grafton Street. I've enclosed a poster with all the details. But I would be amiss if I didn't mention the generosity of Marilou's friends and the many friends and businesses who have donated gifts and services for a fundraising auction. So, in addition to a dance, you'll also be able to bid on some truly wonderful auction items, including restaurant gift certificates, a variety of dynamite weekend getaway packages, and original art from several of Nova Scotia's talented artists and artisans. A sample of the offerings:
- a catered dinner for 6 in your own home from the Cellar Bar & Grill
- a weekend package at the Sussex Hot Air Balloon Festival, complete with helicopter ride amongst the balloons
- gorgeous paintings from Tom Anthes and Liz Wilcox
- a weekend for two at the Royal York in Toronto
- wine tasting with Mark DeWolf
If you're free, please consider joining us, and please invite your friends. Organize a group and join in the fun - Big Fish will be playing. It might be a wonderful way to reconnect with people you haven't seen since high school or university. It will definitely be a night to remember. If you can't make it, no worries. But maybe you could send the flier along to someone else who might be interested?
If you'd like to make a donation, either financial or in kind, just let me know, and I'll get in touch.
Thanks for your time, and for reading this far. I hope to see you on the 16th!
Cheers,
Richard

Online Magazine Fundraiser
The Halifax ISKF has launched a new fundraising campaign to help support our provincial team members going to the nationals in Vancouver this May.
This fundraiser allows you to purchase magazine subscriptions online at a reduced rate from newsstand prices. Once a subscription is ordered a portion of the subscription price will be donated back to the club. The magazines themselves are real and shipped to your home address, so not just an online subscription!
As a quick example you can get a one year, 12 issue, subscription to Black Belt magazine for only $46 through this fundraiser, as opposed to paying $95 from the newsstand. Not a bad deal at all!
If you are interested in taking a look or purchasing a subscription here is the link: http://www.efundraisingonline.ca/ISKFNovaScotia
These make great gifts too so let your family and friends know!

New ISKF Dojo Opens in Clayton Park/Bedford at the Canada Games Centre and Pathways Program Continues for a Second Year in Spryfield
Congratulations to Jeff and Crissy Murphy in establishing youth classes at the new Canada Games Centre in Clayton Park this fall.
Classes will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays (View Program). This represents a major breakthrough in the Clayton Park/Bedford/Sackville community. I encourage you to promote these classes to any one in the Clayton Park/Bedford/Sackville area. If it is successful, the Centre will permit Jeff to conduct adult classes.
They will also continue the special program for youths enrolled in the Pathways Program in the Spryfield area. They will be busy karatekas indeed.
I am very pleased to see the growth and expansion of our organization this year. Thank you to all the dedicated volunteers!
Osu.

Springvale Elementary Karate Club
June 16, 2011
A special thanks goes out to John McGowan for teaching an after school karate program this term at the Springvale Elementary School in Halifax.
There were about 30 enthusiastic pupils who all obtained their yellow belts at the end of the course during a special class and grading held by Sensei Tony. They all showed excellent form and more importantly, proper karate etiquette.
Well done John and those of our dojo who were able to assist from time to time!

In Memory of Joe O'Leary (1952 - Feb 23, 2011)
March 2, 2011The Halifax ISKF is very saddened by the news of the passing of one of it’s members, Joe O’Leary. He had trained with us for over 5 years and always endeavoured to perfect his techniques and character.
Joe had a true passion for photography and was employed as a medical photographer at the QEII Health Sciences Centre. He loved to travel and was fortunate enough to have traveled extensively throughout the world. Joe was an extremely active person who especially enjoyed karate, kayaking and camping. He treasured time spent wit
h his family and friends and will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
Through the generous donation of members of the dojo, a scholarship has been established in memory of Joe in the amount of $250 to be awarded to support members of our dojo attending special events such as Master Camp, clinics or tournaments.
All are invited to share a toast to Joe O'Leary after the Brown/Black belt class on Monday 7th March. The location at the moment is Freeman's on Quinpool Rd.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Salvation Army. Online donations and condolences may be made at: http://www.kennebecasisfh.com/Obituaries/60131

Dan and Judge Examination Results (.pdf)
Dear Karatekas,
Sensei Danny just returned from the Pan Am Championships in Guyana over the week end. I will let him tell you about the competition but I wanted to congratulate him a great job in representing Canada. Here is an excerpt from a message he sent to me:
"Tony, nothing significant to report at the tournament. It was a fun time despite the intense heat. We had a parade in the capital city of Georgetown on Friday morning after working until noon on Thursday, travelled 12 hours and sleeping for 5 hours. Met the mayor in a garden reception after the parade, then we went sightseeing and then met the president of the country at 3 pm at his house. The judges test was moved earlier to the Thursday during the judges seminar, Maureen, Alice and Peter Warren passed. I had to do a special test in front of 2000 people and 200 competitors the first thing Saturday morning during team kumite eliminations for female and male, with no other ring in operation until the test was done. I passed. Canada did really well, Matt Moody is much improved. I made a presentation to Frank at the opening ceremonies in front of the dignitaries for a personal donation to the building of the Guyana Karate College of 2000.00, which is 400,000.00 Guyanese money!"
The special test was his judge’s test and now Sensei Danny is a “A Class” judge. I believe that he and Sensei Maureen are the first Canadians in ISKF history to get this qualification through a test instead of having it awarded. A significant achievement!"
He also put on quite a show at the banquet by playing the Caribbean drums on stage and then putting on a Salsa dance demo with a couple of the Quebec female team members.
Congrats to Dan for being a true ambassador of ISKF Canada!
Sensei Tony

Andy Allen, 5th dan, reached the men's kata finals and placed 7th in a field of over 45 competitors. The men's provincial kata team placed a close 4th. Phil O'Brien, placed 2nd in brown belt kata and 3rd in brown belt kumite while Nicole McVarish took 1st place in in brown belt kata and kumite. Many others advanced through elimination rounds.
